About The VALOR Lyme Disease Vaccine Study

Lyme disease is a common illness caused by a bacteria found in ticks. Bites from infected ticks can transfer the bacteria to humans and cause rashes, fever, and fatigue. If left untreated, Lyme disease can progress to cause severe, sometimes permanent symptoms. Currently, there are no approved vaccines available to prevent Lyme disease.

The VALOR study is an ongoing clinical trial which has already enrolled more than 6,000 adults and 800 children. This study is evaluating if an investigational Lyme vaccine is safe and effective for preventing Lyme disease in people who have been exposed through tick bites.

Make an Important Contribution

By choosing to volunteer for this study, participants could receive an investigational vaccine that may help to prevent Lyme disease. Participants will represent others like them — in age, gender, race, ethnicity, and from communities like their own. Including people from different backgrounds will help us develop a Lyme disease vaccine that is more likely to be effective for everyone.

Joining a clinical trial is an important and personal decision for you and your family. Thank you for considering this study.

Who Can Participate

Healthy adults and children 5 years of age or older who live in or often visit outdoor areas that may expose them to ticks may be eligible to participate. Study participants cannot have been diagnosed with Lyme disease within 3 months of enrollment.

Activities that may increase a person's risk of Lyme disease include:

mountain
Living in or frequently visiting areas where ticks that carry Lyme disease are found, such as wooded areas, tree lines, open fields, lakesides, or riversides
tree
Having an outdoor occupation such as landscaping, forestry, wildlife, or parks management
tent
Engaging in outdoor recreation such as hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, or gardening
pet
Owning a pet that has returned with ticks attached after being outside

There are other requirements to participate in this study. A study team member will help determine if this study is a good fit for you.

You will then be asked to provide your contact information for a study representative to contact you and discuss the next steps. Only the study staff can determine if you meet the study's eligibility criteria and are able to enroll in the study.
